Ask the Romance Writer Girl

Here's the big chance you've been waiting for--the chance to ask me any question you want. Dirty, dirty questions...oh, sorry, (ahem) wrong blog. Anyway, writing questions, non-writing questions, questions about panty preferences, etc.

Okay, so we've already covered every topic imaginable. That's the problem. I need you people to tell me what you want to know. Ask the romance writer girl. She will answer.

Who's your favourite critique partner?

Speaking of critique partners....
Does your husband read your manuscripts? I used to let my husband read what I wrote, but it became too much of a problem. He doesn't read much, and I don't think he's encouraging enough, so I banned him from reading anything. It drives him a little nuts, but he understands.

I think the spelling of "favorite" gives you away, Anonymous. ;-)

Unless Jamie has a lot of CPs from Canada...

Damn it. Melissa, you're too smart. Besides, CP are my initials.

Clearly, I need to hone my Sneak skills.

Hey, I checked out your website, Melissa. Nice job!

Okay, Jamie, you want a question? Um, You write very fast. Why aren't you insane by now?

There, that's my question.

Theresa, I have never felt comfortable letting anyone but my critique partners read my manuscripts, and even then I'm not always willing to do that. Cindy gets to read bits and pieces--usually I ask for help with a first chapter or a specific scene--of my work but never the whole book. Heh. Lucky her.

Well, early on, like when i was writing my first book, I did let my husband read a bit of it, but it quickly became clear that wasn't a great idea. For one thing, I just don't like sharing my work with "the public" before it's polished, and for another, he's not a big reader so it wasn't like he could provide helpful feedback. Similar to your situation.

Cindy, you clearly have overlooked the fact that I AM insane by now.

My husband comes from the most pessimistic family imaginable. They drive me crazy sometimes. I didn't realize how much my husband was like that until he started going on about the "odd's against" getting anything published. He's been banned from the whole topic ever since.

I used to read your full manuscripts--before you sold!

Now, Jamie, that was a serious question about your insanity levels. How do you juggle all your contracts with your mommy duties? I think that would make an interesting post. Lord knows *I* didn't have your energy at the same age.

Hey thanks, Cindy. I worked very hard on that pre-designed template. ;-) No professional designers until the first advance check comes in...

I don't let my hubby read my mss either. He would if I asked him to, but a) he's not a big reader, and b) they are the printed equivalent of a "chick flick", right? (At least in a man's eyes!) So I don't think he would enjoy them, even though he is **extremely** supportive. I'm just glad for that much!

Lee reads anything I write practically before I have hit save. Really. Okay I do hit save every three seconds now and he doesn't read it every three seconds. But he reads pretty much everything I write.

Of course I married him because he is the only straight man in history who had read all of Anne Rice's books three times. Not that any of my writing is like Anne Rice's just that he reads.

I'll try to think up a question.

I don't mean to sound as if my husband is totally unsupportive. He's very chagrined that he messed up so bad he's now banned from reading anything I write. Believe me, he's learned his lesson. :D

I write as a hobby, but one thing I completely HATE is Writer's Block... whether it's b/c I write myself into a corner or lose interest or whatever. Question: Do you ever suffer from "writer's block" and how do you break through it?

At 10:36 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Do you ever have the fear that your writing imagination will dry up? Have you ever ventured writing something besides romance?

At 7:36 PM, Blogger Jamie Sobrato said...

Tim, I think we all reach those places in the story where no words are coming. It sucks! You are right that it's usually something wrong with the story. I usually have to go back and figure out what went wrong. Either a character isn't motivated, or my characterization is too shallow, or there's a plot problem, or whatever.

I'm not a linear kind of person, so I often skip ahead to the end of the story and write it, then start filling in in-between scenes, and sometimes that helps me see what wasn't going right earlier in the story.

Occasionally it's just that i'm too distracted by things going on in my personal life to focus well enough on the story.

Anonymous, early on, when i first started writing seriously, I did worry a lot about running out of ideas. But the longer I've been writing seriously, the more ideas I get, and I realized somewhere along the way that creativity breeds creativity.

I don't worry any more about my imagination drying up. It's part of who I am. If I ever get to a point where I'm not writing, I'll know there is something seriously wrong with me and I need to seek professional help! (Oh hush Cindy... I know, I know, I already need professional help.)

And regarding whether I've written anything besides romance, I have tested the waters here and there to see if I enjoy writing in other genres. I've never gotten more than a chapter or two along before getting bored or scatter-brained.

I do have an interest in writing more mainstream women's fiction, but all my stories turn into romances, so I think I'm right where I belong. :-)
